Of all the UK scholarships on offer to international students, Chevening is one of the most prestigious and competitive. As well as offering fully-funded master's degrees, it is a unique opportunity for the next generation of leaders, influencers, and decision-makers to develop a relationship with the UK that will grow throughout their careers. Since the programme was created in 1983, nearly 60,000 outstanding professionals have had the opportunity to develop in the UK through Chevening.

There are approximately 1,500 Chevening Scholarships awarded globally each year — and the 2027–28 application window opens in August 2026. If you are a working professional with at least two years of post-graduation experience and a genuine commitment to leadership in your field, this guide tells you everything you need to know.

What Is the Chevening Scholarship?

Funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and partner organisations, Chevening Scholarships are awarded to individuals with demonstrable leadership potential and strong academic backgrounds. The scholarships offer full financial support to study for any eligible master's degree at any UK university. Additionally, Chevening scholars gain access to a wide range of exclusive academic, professional, and cultural experiences.

Chevening is not just a scholarship — it is a global alumni network. Once you are a Chevening Scholar, you are part of a community of 60,000+ influential professionals across 160+ countries who maintain active connections throughout their careers.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for a Chevening Scholarship you must: Commit to returning to your home country for at least two years after your award ends. Have at least 2,800 hours of work experience after graduating from your undergraduate degree — this is roughly equivalent to two years of full-time work, though it may have been completed over a different time period. Hold an undergraduate degree that qualifies you for a UK master's programme. You must have finished your undergraduate studies at least two years before our application deadline. Apply to three different and eligible UK university courses — you must have received an unconditional offer from at least one of these course choices by 17:00 BST (UK time) 9 July 2026.

Eligibility Summary Table

Criterion Requirement
Nationality Citizen of a Chevening-eligible country (not UK citizen)
Work Experience Minimum 2,800 hours post-graduation (~2 years full-time)
Education Bachelor's degree (completed at least 2 years before deadline)
University Offers Apply to 3 UK universities; receive 1 unconditional offer
Return Commitment Return to home country for minimum 2 years after award
Language No Chevening IELTS requirement — check your university's requirements

Who Is NOT Eligible

You are not eligible if you hold British or dual British citizenship (unless from a British Overseas Territory or BN(O) from Hong Kong). You are not eligible if you hold refugee status in a non-Chevening eligible country. You are not eligible if you have previously studied in the UK with funding from a UK government-funded scholarship.

Note: Having a master's degree does not prevent you from applying for a second master's degree in the UK through Chevening.

The Application Process

Check your eligibility first — nationality, degree, work experience. Choose three courses at UK universities that are eligible and fit your career plan. Make sure at least one unconditional offer is possible in time. Prepare required documents: academic transcripts, degree certificates, references, proof of work experience. Write strong essays — Chevening requires essay questions on leadership, networking, future goals, and course choice.

Step-by-Step Application Guide

Step 1: Check Your Country's Chevening Page Visit chevening.org/apply, select your country, and review any country-specific additional requirements.

Step 2: Create Your Account Register and begin your application profile. Keep your login credentials safe — you will use the same account at every stage.

Step 3: Complete the Eligibility Quiz Chevening's online quiz confirms whether you meet the basic eligibility requirements before you invest time in a full application.

Step 4: Write Your Four Essays This is the most time-consuming and important step. Chevening requires four essays:

Essay What It Must Demonstrate
Leadership and Influence A specific example of leadership — name the situation, your role, the outcome
Networking How you build and use professional networks; why this matters for your career
Career Plan & Goals Where you are going, why a UK master's is essential to getting there
Why Chevening Why Chevening specifically — not just why the UK

Personal, specific, impactful examples are better than vague statements. Submit before the deadline — the system shuts down exactly at the closing time, no late submissions.

Step 5: Select Three UK Universities Chevening Scholarships do not require IELTS or TOEFL from Chevening itself — the requirement however depends on the universities and programmes candidates apply for.

Choose three different UK master's programmes. At least one should be your realistic first choice; the other two provide backup options in case your first choice does not offer an unconditional place.

Step 6: Submit by Deadline October 2026 for the 2027–28 cycle.

The Interview: What to Expect

If shortlisted, the interview will test not only your qualifications but your clarity of vision, so be ready to explain your leadership journey, your ambitions, and how you plan to make a positive impact after returning home.

Interviews are conducted at British Embassies and High Commissions in your home country. A panel of 2–3 reviewers assesses your leadership narrative, professional goals, and knowledge of your field.

The authorities strongly discourage the use of AI to generate answers. Be prepared for follow-up questions based on your essays — inconsistency between what you wrote and what you say in the interview is a common reason for rejection at the interview stage.

The Work Experience Requirement: Understanding 2,800 Hours

2,800 hours is roughly two years of full-time work. But it does not need to be two consecutive years:

Work Type Counts?
Full-time employment Yes
Part-time work (pro-rated) Yes
Internships (post-graduation) Yes
Freelancing with documented evidence Yes
Volunteer work in professional role Case-by-case
Work during undergraduate studies No

Only work experience gained after the date of your graduation will count. A student who graduated in June 2024 and has worked since then will accumulate approximately 4,000 hours by October 2026 — comfortably meeting the requirement.

2026 vs 2027 Cycle: Which One to Target

Factor 2026–27 Cycle 2027–28 Cycle
Application Period Closed (Aug–Oct 2025) Opens August 2026
Interview Stage Ongoing (early 2026) Dec 2026 – April 2027
Results Announced June 2026 June 2027
Studies Begin September/October 2026 September/October 2027

Applications for 2027/28 Chevening Scholarships will open in August 2026. If you missed the 2025 application window, your next opportunity begins in August 2026. Use the intervening months to build work experience, refine your career narrative, and research UK universities.

Chevening Essay Tips: What the Selection Committee Looks For

When writing your essays, take some time to think about the stories you can use from your life or experiences that align with the essay topics. Your essays should be authentic, highlighting your clear vision, commitment, and leadership potential. Ensure your essays are well thought out and proofread for grammar.

The biggest mistake applicants make: writing essays about general concepts and ambitions without concrete personal examples. Every Chevening essay must have a specific story with a beginning, middle, and outcome. "I believe leadership is important" is not a Chevening essay. "In 2023, I led a team of 12 to deliver a government water project 3 weeks ahead of schedule by resolving a contractor dispute" is.

Return to Home Country: The Non-Negotiable Commitment

By accepting a Chevening award, you agree to return home for two years at the end of your scholarship. Please note that Chevening scholars cannot apply for a Graduate Route Visa.

This is the most important condition to understand before applying. Chevening is designed to develop leaders who will use their UK education to benefit their home countries — not as a pathway to UK immigration. The two-year return home commitment is legally binding.

Why Chevening Is Different from Other UK Scholarships

Scholarship Covers Work Exp Required UK Uni Choice
Chevening Any UK master's, any subject Yes (2,800 hours) Your choice — any eligible UK uni
Gates Cambridge Cambridge only No Cambridge only
Commonwealth Specific unis No Limited partner unis
GREAT Partial funding only No Limited unis

Chevening's freedom to choose any subject at any UK university is its most powerful feature. You are not restricted to specific institutions or fields.

The Bottom Line

For working professionals with 2+ years post-graduation experience: Chevening is the UK's most prestigious scholarship and the most realistic pathway to a fully-funded UK master's for motivated individuals worldwide.

For fresh graduates: Build your work experience now. By August 2026, you should have approximately 2,800 hours accumulated since graduation.

For essay preparation: Start writing in June 2026, not in September. Strong Chevening essays require real reflection and multiple drafts — not a week of rushed writing.

Most important: Applications for the 2027–28 cycle open August 2026. Subscribe to Chevening's newsletter at chevening.org to be notified the moment applications open.
