Canada Study Visa for Pakistanis 2026 – SDS Is Gone, GIC & Full New Process Guide
Canada's fast-track SDS visa was discontinued November 2024. Here's the complete 2026 study permit process for Pakistanis — GIC, PGWP, SOP tips, and what to do without SDS.
By Kashif Mehmood, Study Abroad & Immigration Writer — March 14, 2026
Effective November 8, 2024, the Student Direct Stream (SDS) was permanently discontinued by the Canadian government. Any application submitted after this date is treated as a regular Canada student visa application. Comsats Most guides Pakistani students are reading online still describe SDS as if it exists. It does not. Every Pakistani applicant now goes through the standard stream — longer processing, more documentation, and a stronger requirement for a compelling Study Plan.
The good news: Pakistani students are still eligible to apply for Canadian study permits. The regular stream allows more flexibility in proof of funds and makes a strong Statement of Purpose and complete documentation even more important than under SDS. Wikipedia
This is the guide for the post-SDS reality.

What SDS Was — And Why Its Removal Matters
The Student Direct Stream offered 20-day processing for students from Pakistan (and 13 other countries) who met specific criteria — full year tuition paid upfront, GIC of CAD $10,000, and IELTS 6.0 in each band.
The SDS program is no longer available for new applications. Wikipedia The removal means:
| Factor | Under SDS (pre-Nov 2024) | Post-SDS Standard Stream (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Processing Time | ~20 calendar days | 8–12 weeks |
| Tuition Requirement | Full year tuition required upfront | Flexible — full year preferred, partial accepted |
| GIC Requirement | CAD $10,000 mandatory | Not mandatory but strongly recommended |
| SOP/Study Plan | Less scrutinised | Now critical — must be strong |
| Financial Flexibility | Rigid | More flexible sources accepted |
The loss of 20-day processing is significant for students on tight intake timelines. Apply early. The 8–12 week window means a September 2026 intake requires a study permit application no later than June 2026.
The 2026 Financial Requirements: GIC and Beyond
GIC (Guaranteed Investment Certificate)
The GIC amount has been updated effective January 1, 2026 to CAD $20,635. The processing fee for opening a GIC account is CAD $200. Maqsad
The GIC is not a cost — it is your own money deposited in a Canadian bank account. After arriving in Canada, you receive the money back in monthly instalments to cover your living expenses. It is proof of financial support, not a government fee.
How to Open a GIC from Pakistan
There are four primary steps: Choose an approved Canadian bank, apply online for your GIC account, fund your account with the minimum CAD $20,635, and receive your GIC certificate to submit with your visa application. Maqsad
Approved GIC-providing banks:
- Scotiabank
- CIBC
- SBI Canada
- ICICI Bank Canada
Process timeline: Allow 2–3 weeks for the GIC account opening and fund transfer from Pakistan. Bank wire transfers can take 3–7 business days, and Pakistani banks may require additional documentation for large international transfers.
In PKR: CAD $20,635 at March 2026 exchange rates is approximately PKR 4,050,000. Add the CAD $200 processing fee (approximately PKR 39,300). Verify current exchange rates before initiating the transfer.
What If You Cannot Afford the Full GIC Upfront?
The standard stream now accepts alternative financial documentation instead of a GIC:
Non-SDS applicants can show financial documents such as 6–12 month bank statements, income tax returns, sponsor documents, fixed deposit records, or education loan approval letters instead of a GIC. Full tuition payment is not mandatory — even partial payment strengthens the application.
Even without SDS, paying all or a good portion of first-year tuition is a strong support for the application. A highly recommended amount is at least one full semester's tuition if you cannot pay the full year. Vstudents

The Study Plan: Your Most Important Document in 2026
The Study Plan (IRCC's Annex A — form IMM5814e) is a critical document. It contains specific questions about your education background, reasons for choosing Canada, your chosen program, and your plans after completing studies in Canada. Vstudents
Post-SDS, IRCC officers scrutinise the Study Plan more carefully because they no longer have the upfront financial commitment as a primary trust signal. Your Study Plan now carries significant weight.
The Study Plan must convincingly answer:
- Why Canada? Not generic — specific features of Canadian education, research environment, or industry exposure relevant to your field.
- Why this specific program? Name specific courses, professors, or research facilities. Generic answers fail.
- Why this institution? Demonstrate you researched the university — not just that it accepted you.
- How will this help your career in Pakistan? Choosing a program that aligns with employability in Pakistan strengthens your ties to home country. Software engineers are well sought-after in Pakistan's booming IT industry — such a program selection supports your ties to Pakistan and should be explicitly stated. Vstudents
- What are your financial sources? Detail your GIC, tuition payment, and any family support. Consistency with your financial documents is essential.
The PGWP: Your Post-Study Work Rights in 2026
The Post-Graduation Work Permit remains one of Canada's strongest draws for Pakistani students.
IRCC confirmed on January 15, 2026 that it will not update its list of PGWP-eligible educational programs for the entire year — providing rare stability for students planning their study and work pathways. The current eligible list includes 1,107 programs. Top Universities
| Degree Level | PGWP Duration | Field-of-Study Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor's degree | Up to 3 years | Exempt — all bachelor's degrees qualify |
| Master's degree | Up to 3 years | Exempt — all master's degrees qualify |
| PhD | Up to 3 years | Exempt |
| College/Certificate (non-degree) | 1–3 years depending on program | Must check IRCC's approved CIP code list |
Students who graduated from bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree programs are exempt from the field-of-study requirement entirely. Only non-degree programs (certificates, diplomas) must confirm their program's CIP code is on the eligible list. TechJuice
Work rights while studying: Students can work up to 20–24 hours per week during academic sessions and full-time during scheduled breaks. NUST
The PR Pathway: Canada After Graduation
After completing their studies, Pakistani students may be eligible to apply for permanent residency through the Canadian Experience Class or Provincial Nominee Programs. The PGWP provides the Canadian work experience that makes Express Entry competitive. Wikipedia
The pathway: Study Permit → PGWP (1–3 years) → Canadian work experience → Express Entry CRS score → PR application. This is one of the clearest permanent residency pathways available from any study destination.
Processing Timeline: Planning Around 8–12 Weeks
| Step | Estimated Time |
|---|---|
| GIC account opening + transfer | 2–3 weeks |
| Medical examination booking + results | 1–2 weeks |
| Biometrics appointment (VFS Global) | 1–2 weeks lead time |
| Study permit application submission | Day 1 of official process |
| IRCC processing (standard stream) | 8–12 weeks |
| Total from start to decision | 12–17 weeks |
For September 2026 intake: Begin the process by April 2026 at the latest. Delays in GIC transfers, medical bookings, or VFS appointments can push timelines out.
Why This Matters: Canada Still Leads for PR-Minded Students
The SDS discontinuation slowed processing. It did not close the pathway. Canada remains a top study abroad destination in 2026, offering world-class universities, affordable tuition compared to the USA and UK, and strong post-study work opportunities. Wikipedia
For Pakistani students whose primary goal is not just a degree but a pathway to permanent residency, Canada remains the clearest option — clearer than the UK, clearer than Australia, clearer than Germany for those who want English-language study and an explicit PR pathway.
The cost is high. The process is now slower. Build your application carefully, submit early, and target PGWP-eligible programs at DLI institutions. The investment still makes sense for students with a long-term immigration goal.
The Bottom Line
No SDS means no shortcuts: Build a strong Study Plan, full or partial tuition payment, and a GIC of CAD $20,635. These three elements replace what SDS used to signal automatically.
Apply by April for September 2026: The 8–12 week processing window is non-negotiable. Late applications risk missing intake.
Target degree programs (bachelor's, master's, PhD): You are automatically exempt from the PGWP field-of-study requirement. Non-degree programs require careful CIP code verification.
Get your PCC and medical done first: These are the most time-consuming pre-application steps. Start them before your university application is even confirmed.
